I'd personally think that August has better combat ability than Zeref does. Most of Zeref's power I would say would be his Curse and the extreme durability he gets from it. Zeref would definitely win against August in a fight but I'd say that August is the 'better mage'. Interestingly this chapter seems to show that August knows a lot of magic. He at least knows Cobra's sound magic. I wonder if he will know Heavenly Body Magic considering that it is seemingly pretty rare. I don't understand how anyone who reads Fairy Tail think that August, or any villain, would really be that much powerful than the good guys they are facing. Hiro designed this story and its characters around the fact that friendship is the only true way to determine who is stronger in situations like this. August wasn't said to be the strongest mage ever either. It was said that he was the "strongest individual", which even if Hiro actually meant the strongest in the 12, it doesn't mean he can't be beat by anyone other than Natsu or Gray. Jellal is a very powerful mage and is a good match for August. Plus, we haven't really seen what he can do lately, so he might have something up his sleeve. Though I personally think he's going to get a team up, but who? It can't be Erza. She's going to have her hands full with Irene and protecting Lucy's ass (because we know she won't be of help here sadly).
